Troops from the paramilitary Frontier Corps (FC) stopped a Toyota car for a security check in Quetta when it entered the city late Friday, FC spokesman Murtaza Baig said.
"They were questioning the driver when he detonated himself, killing three FC soldiers and two officials of the military intelligence," Baig told AFP.
The bomber was also blown into pieces, the official said.
He said the alleged terrorist may have planned to target some military installation or a public place during Eidul Fitr.
"The soldiers sacrificed their lives to foil a major terror attack," he added.
There was no claim of responsibility for the latest incident.

To all those who reflexively blame a foreign hand for these attacks, try using some logic. 1) what south asian would knowingly kill themselves for Israel and America? Has such a Muslim ever existed? No. So if they are not knowing agents of Israel, India and America, then conspiracy theory 101 tells us they are puppets who are being financed by outsiders, but the actual bombers don't know they're doing the foreigners bidding. So let's say this is true. You must then ask yourself,what is motivating these puppets to kill themselves if they dont know they're really foreign puppets? What justifies these attacks in the bombers minds? And here is where the answer shatters the whole conspiracy structure. The answer is that they have been taught that suicide attacks against their fellow Muslims are religiously justified and will win them a place in paradise. So from the pakistani governments position, it DOESNT MATTER who is financing them - the trouble stems from the extremist religious indoctrination of these people, and the solution is to address that problem, whether the bombers are being paid by Israel, India or Santa Claus.
