Enforced disappearances: Nine missing persons released

PHC still dissatisfied with security agencies, issues new notices to defence, interior secretaries.

PESHAWAR:

Nine former missing persons will be celebrating Eidul Fitr with their families following their release by security forces.

A Peshawar High Court (PHC) division bench comprising Chief Justice (CJ) Dost Muhammad Khan and Justice Roohul Amin Khan was informed that the nine persons had reached home following their release during the hearing of the missing persons cases on Thursday.

However, PHC still seems dissatisfied with the security agencies’ feedback and issued notices to the federal defence and interior secretaries once again, asking them to determine the whereabouts of the remaining missing persons. The court directed them to submit a written reply along with a signed affidavit before September 12 - the date for the next hearing of the missing persons case.

Deputy Attorney General Iqbal Mohmand sought some time to contact both ministries regarding the remaining missing persons.

At the same time, Wing Commander Muhammad Irfan, representing the federal defence ministry, informed the bench that they had been in contact with both Inter Services Intelligence and Military Intelligence to determine their current whereabouts.

Meanwhile, Frontier Corps (FC) representative Major Zafar Iqbal informed the bench that nine others have been transferred to internment centres for ‘de-radicalisation’.

He added that a ‘grey-category’ militant, Shamil, has also been referred to the Khyber Agency political administration (PA) for trial under section 40 of the Frontier Crimes Regulation, he added.

The court ordered the Khyber Agency PA to conclude case proceedings against Shamil at the earliest.
