LAHORE:

Dr Amjad Riaz, an assistant professor at the University of Veterinary and Animal Science (UVAS), was given the ‘Young Scientist Award’ during the International Congress on Animal Reproduction (ICAR) 2012 held recently in Vancouver, Canada.

The scientist was given the award, which is for researchers from developing countries and includes a cash prize of $1,500 (Rs141,750), for a paper on how to predict buffalo ovarian reserves by ultrasonography, said a UVAS press release issued on Wednesday. His work will help scientists develop embryo transfer technology for buffaloes, said the UVAS press release.

Dr Riaz was on a team of four Pakistani veterinarians and animal scientists led by Professor Nasim Ahmad, dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences at UVAS, that attended the International Congress.

More than 900 delegates from 62 different countries participated in the Congress, which is 65 years old and meets every four years. An exhibition was also held during the Congress.

Prof Nasim chaired a workshop on buffalo reproduction that included scientists from India, China, Italy, Brazil, Canada and the USA. The next ICAR will be held in Tours, France, in 2016. Prof Nasim is a member of the standing committee for the next ICAR.

UVAS Vice Chancellor Prof Talat Naseer Pasha congratulated the scientists on their achievements.
