LAHORE:

The Lahore High Court has sought a reply from the Punjab University vice chancellor to a petition challenging the appointment of Dr Syed Mansoor Sarwar as principal of the PU College of Information Technology.

Prof Dr Nasir Ahmad of the PU geology department had filed the petition, submitting that Dr Sarwar’s appointment was illegal. He said that Dr Sarwar was initially appointed principal for three years on a contract basis on April 19, 2006. The contract was extended for a further three years on October 19, 2009.

The petitioner argued that a contract employee could not be appointed to a permanent post until a fresh appointment process was conducted where other eligible candidates were considered. He said the respondent was functioning in violation of Article 5 of the Constitution.

He asked the court to set aside the appointment as illegal and unconstitutional. Justice Farrukh Irfan Khan issued notices to the respondents and directed them to submit their replies within two weeks.
