Out Of Court: Wife wins alimony after husband marries twice

A woman reached a compromise with her husband on Saturday over a case she initially filed in the district and sessions court when he did not pay her maintenance allowance.
Parveen*, a mother of eight children, had filed the case against Shakir*, a police constable, for getting married a second time without seeking her consent, and for not paying her spousal and child maintenance.
According to her lawyer, Shahnaz Khan, Shakir agreed to pay the monthly allowance of Rs23,000, dower in the shape of six tolas of gold within a month, and give a five-story building to his children.
“Parveen has won the case through compromise, but she does not need to live with her husband,” said Khan. It is up to her whether she continues to live with her children or with her husband in the presence of his second wife, added the lawyer.
Both groups and their counsels appeared before the court and submitted a written copy of the compromise. The second family judge Malir, Abdul Qayyum Syed, decreed the case as closed.
