PU body to implement legal education reforms

Prof Malik stressed the need for changing the question paper patterns to avoid stereotyping.

LAHORE:
The Punjab University is going to constitute a central committee soon to ensure implementation of the legal education reforms approved by its Board of Studies in Law in all law colleges affiliated with the varsity.

Prof Muhammad Ehsan Malik, the Faculty of Law dean, announced the decision on Sunday at a meeting of principals of law colleges affiliated with University.

Prof Malik and Mr Justice (r) Khalilur Rehman Khan, the Punjab Law Reforms Committee chairman, jointly presided over the meeting at the office of the PU Law College (PULC) principal at the Quaid-i-Azam Campus here. Prof Samee Ozair, the PULC principal, was also present on the occasion.

Justice Rehaman and Prof Malik briefed the participants on the reforms approved by the Board. They also lauded the efforts of the PU vice chancellor, Prof Mujahid Kamran, for the proposed upgrade. The meeting decided that each of the colleges shall constitute a committee to ensure smooth implementation of the Board recommendations.

In his presentation, Prof Malik stressed the need for changing the question paper patterns to avoid stereotyping. He recommended that question papers be made problem-oriented so that the students solve a legal problem or decide a case citing relevant legal provisions. He said the law students should be introduced to research methodology and the ways of looking for relevant case law. They should also develop their understanding of case law and legal drafting skills, he added. At his prompting, the meeting decided to slightly change the pattern to be followed for question papers for law examinations so that a question in each paper shall pose a problem to be attempted/solved by the student in the light of relevant laws.
