The hearing of a petition against holding of dual office by President Asif Ali Khan Zardari was adjourned till September 12 by a full bench of Sindh High Court here on Monday.
The bench headed by Justice Maqbool Baqar earlier heard petitioner Abdul Rasheed Akhund advocate, a senior PPP stalwart who stated that petition has been pending for eight months. No one is ready to even talk about it, he complained.
The bench said it was ready to hear any case, including the instant case, and then adjourned till September 12. It asked the petitioner as well as the counsel for the federation to come prepared on points of law and fact. There will be no adjournment from the next date, the bench said in clear terms.
The petitioner maintains that holding the offices of the co-chairman of Pakistan Peoples Party and president simultaneously is illegal. The president is the symbol of Federation of Pakistan and is the head of state for all Pakistanis irrespective of political affiliations, the petitioner submitted adding that co-chairmanship of the PPP is a political office and it represents only one political party.
The president shall vacate either the presidency or leave the party position, he submitted, requesting the court to declare that holding dual positions is unconstitutional.
