Fatal fall: Mountaineer falls to death on Broad Peak

Back in 2003, Baqir’s brother was also killed while attempting to scale a peak.

GILGIT:

A young Pakistani mountaineer Mohammad Baqir died during his journey back from Broad Peak in Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B), officials said on Thursday.

Baqir, 35, was a member of a British expedition group that trekked up to the third camp of the 26,400-feet-high Broad Peak (8,047 metres), said Hassan Sadpara, an acclaimed mountaineer of G-B.

Baqir was at an altitude of about 400 feet from the base camp when he slipped and fell while crossing a water channel, said Sadpara. Back in 2003, Baqir’s brother, Ghulam Raza, was also killed while attempting to scale a peak. Baqir belonged to Sadpara, the native village of Hassan Sadpara, a renowned mountaineer who scaled five prominent peaks, including K2, Nanga Parbat, and Broad Peak.

On March 9, Nisar Husain Sadpara, another Pakistan’s youngest mountaineer, went missing while attempting to climb Gasherbrum 1 along with Gerfried Goschl from Austria and Cedric Hahlen from Switzerland.
