Belief in the ability to run vehicles on water seems to now have become a matter of national pride. Nuclear scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, whose hyper patriotism seems to have swallowed the scientific nous he possesses, has treated the ‘discovery’ as if it was real without examining it scientifically. The cabinet, perhaps, in a burst of excitement at the prospect of our energy woes being solved, wants a demonstration of the water kit. A lone scientist or two have been trying to inject sanity into the debate but have been shouted down by others who see a genuine scientific breakthrough where none may exist. We have often been accused by our detractors as a people ruled by emotion rather than reason. By being gullible enough to believe that we can use water as a fuel, we are doing our best to live up to the caricature.
The problem here is that we are so insecure about our achievements on the world stage that when one of our own claims to have done something incredible, our first instinct is to believe him, defend him against all criticism and see the person as improving the image of the country. Naysayers are instantly denounced as self-loathing individuals. Meanwhile, those who have genuinely advanced scientific knowledge in their fields, like Dr Abdus Salam, are forgotten simply because of their religious beliefs. It is sad that when the Higgs boson particle was recently discovered, none of our media pundits conducted the kind of extensive talk shows on Dr Salam’s contribution to this great discovery, like the ones they have devoted to the ‘invention’ of the water kit.

Dear Agha Sahib, If you really used LC circuit then frequency of your circuit should be about 1150 GHz, if so then I can prove your setup on scientific theoretical basis,
Energo is working on Energy Reactor in various sizes to fit in Cars/Trucks and for Generators to produce cheap/clean energy for the ultimate benefit of humanity. The experiment was successful on May 9,2012 when LENR Technoque 3000cc Toyota Land Cruiser Prado was launched.which completed 8000KM till today and there was no problem. @Omar Ali: Einstein did not show that newtons laws were completely wrong - just only in certain conditions (in very very high speeds). In effect he built upon and improved on newtons laws - which is how modern scientific theories develop. This is how modern theories have developed over the last hundred years. Agha Waqar's claim is so far beyond current thermodynamic laws that it would bring into question the working principle of so many everyday devices, observations and scientifically conducted experiments. Also, Agha Waqar has not really demonstrated that the car works by taking energy from water. He only showed a car with a water kit working - with no proof whatsoever where the energy is coming from, the water or the car battery.
@Naveen Singla: I totally agree on this point, which is the 2nd law of thermodynamics. and off course one energy is being used to convert different energy source. Previously there were lots of article on this invention has come out with few implementation in the international market as well, but the truth is all invention remained just a part of the Funding project and/or limited to the demonstration. But congratulate to the Pak scientist.
@ Omar Ali
One more thing the "engineer" claims to use distilled water for electrolysis which is impossible!!! Please go read a book.
@Omar Ali: So where is the data to support his claim that he has in fact proved fundamental laws of physics wrong. Science needs more that "gaari tu chalti hai". Plus laws of physics can't be broken as easily as laws of Pakistan.
@Cynical
Are you serious?
Water Kit can be a serious threat to the Bloom Box!!! - if it is TRUE
If water kit concept is not fake then it won't be that hard to get funding for the project, see on the below video how the start-up firm Bloom Box is able to attract $400 million funding very easily - the inventor of the Bloom Box claim a Brick Size Bloom Box made of Ocean Sand!!! can power four houses in Asia!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khKQTWl5Nc&feature=playerembedded
please wach the following documentary http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38NioCGr5as and then decide
@Omar Ali: "We should offer full support to engineer Agha Waqar, award him in Parliament and take him on foreign tour to demonstrate his invention world wide. Something that people could not do for so many years, that is show law of conservation of energy is wrong, a Pakistani has done in 2012"
Have you had any education?? Saying that law of conservation of energy does not exist is equivalent to saying that gravity does not exist. It's not just a law, it's how nature works. 2+2 can never be equal to 5 and please don't make us a joke by wanting to demonstrate this worldwide, the world will only laugh at us, on our naivety and scientific illiteracy. My advice to you, please study grade 6 physics and you will understand everything :).
Wow !!!!!!!! It is simply too hillarious to fathom. Water kit , hahahahaha. Lol. The basic law of physics is turned over by the brilliant technician. It happens only in pakistan. Are all the scientists so well educated there ? Take care.
Without any sort of explanation of the procedure, how in the world can the media believe stuff like this is beyond my comprehension. It shows how illiterate we people really are, which is truly unfortunate.
If its werent so sad, it would be funny. If i didn't want to cry, I would be laughing my head. The ignorance of us Pakistanis is amazing. Years and years of mullah-ized education and years of fiction about our origins, our religion, and history is finally affecting our brains. You to be a real fool with no scientific education whatsoever to believe in the water car. What a waste.
@Omar Ali: I am stunned at the level of our science education. Dr Abdul Salam had time and again stressed upon the importance of basic scientific knowledge, and rightly so; we are pathetic. If you had said these words in any international gathering you would have been laughed out of the room.
@Dr Pakhtun: Assuming you have attended physics and Chemistry, Water powered engine is a hypothetical one. It doesn't exist, The claim is that they can make Hydrogen (H2) from Water by breaking hydrogen bonds, and as hydrogen is an amazing fuel, we can burn it to release water and energy," 2H2+O2 = 2H_2O+ Energy ". So what have you got?, take water, break it to hydrogen and Oxygen, and make water back, that means you have gained zero energy, as the laws says 'Energy can neither be created nor be destroyed'. It is like this perpetual motion. If any words/phrases mentioned above are unclear, please feel free to put a reply. Saneem Ahmed Research Student, IISc Bangalore.
@Al-chemisto: Finally someone! Tribune themselves don't seem to know basics of science either.
Why don't you people get it. Dr Atta ur Rahman is a man of science. he was asking some real valid questions. And if Agha Waqar is convinced that he has made something this remarkable, he should've answered those.
It is not politics where you can convince people by just giving an emotional (and full of lies) speech, or if 2/3 majority of the parliament can defy a basic principle of physics. it is science and you are wrong if you are violating rules unless you prove the rules wrong.
take a look at this article, worth the read and it explains the possibilities behind the claim made be agha waqar. http://www.zupdates.com/2012/run-car-on-water-scam/
I belive humans were created from a lump of clay. As such I have no problem in believing that a car can run on water.
Water kit is a big hoax.
@Omar Ali: There is nothing new or Pakistani about this "invention". See for yourself by reading this Wikipedia entry: http://bit.ly/NW2Bog (and no the Wikipedia entry has not been created by the CIA/RAW/Mossad trio just to deny us our just due!
The biggest problem of Pakistani Nation is inferiority complex. News website editors have it as well.
In a country where AQ Khan is a hero, Mr Waqar could be hero too. We have become a laughing stock in the world of science.
@Asad A Q Khan supports this fraud because A Q Khan himself is a fraud.
my dear sir , in a country where insanity prevails everywhere let this inventor of water kit has his field day . our busy legislators has to do something for the day , let them see this demo personally and then hopefully they may realize that they have wasted public money.
everyone.. the claimant is not an engineer.. he is technician, please make correction...
Water molecule can indeed be split up in to Hydrogen and Oxygen, but this process will need more energy than it provides when Hydrogen combustion happens with Oxygen (to form water again).
If this were not the case, then this cycle of Hydrogen seperation & H2O formation thru combustion could be endless and is equal to 'perpetual motion' - Which is impossible according to laws of Physics.
Why ET has to bring everything with religion? what has happened to writers and bloggers, is it the cheap way to get fame? very sad!
@Omar Ali: Let's put a hypothetical question, Since this "invention" has not ye been proven to be working what will happen to you if it turns out to be a fraud? I've seen the PTV show yesterday and he kept changing his claims in front of Dr. Samar Mubarak Mand. His reactions and things he said were worth seeing. The scientists were almost angry that these sui gas pipes connected with DUCT TAPES are not capable of handling such high pressure gas and yet he's claiming to run a car on it. I'm sorry to burst your bubble of pride but watch out the news for this fraud is having an inspection at NUST today. Please do this nation a favour and expose this fraud as passionately as you've made your hero after he's exposed.
Please understand that laws are PROVEN mathematically and practically and are not theories. Theories can be proven wrong, not scientific laws. Simply put these laws are created by God and discovered by humans to be existing. They are not created by Humans. In a layman's term the law of conservation of energy means that a frying pan cannot be hotter than the fire burning beneath it. In ideal condition when all energy of fire is transferred to the frying pan it will be as hot as the fire. This is how God has created things. What Waqar is claiming is that if his "discovery" is correct then the frying pan can by hotter than the fire burning beneath it.
What a scam!!! It requires so much energy to break down water into hydrogen and oxygen. And the energy you get by mixing Hydrogen gas with oxygen again produces the same amount of energy. And not to forget using hydrogen gas as a fuel is dangerous and can not work in normal car cylinders because reaction of Hydrogen and oxygen to make water is an explosive one!! Use of hydrogen is not effective as a fuel for cars because of several reasons. Besides the guy is using batteries to turn water to hydrogen and oxygen. What after a couple of hours the battery gets discharged? How do you charge your batteries? I can not believe this guy is an engineer lol. A fraud and a scamster. He should be put in jail for making a fool out of the gullible public.
@Omar Ali: please tell me that your comments were a joke? Are you serious have you no idea about basic physics? This cannot be done in the way this guy is claiming it and shame on AQ khan and chairman PEC for supporting this fraud. I invite you to take this fraud guy on foreign tours to demo his fraud machine so that we can become the laughing stock of the whole wide world. Then again being the nation we are perhaps we deserve to be ruled by corrupt leaders driving water cars.
A flawed idea, engineers and scientists have abandoned it quiet ago as you input more energy than you get in return.
I've seen the programs myself and Mr Agha repeatedly declared the 'water kit works on 100% pure distilled water and nothing else' and 'that it used electrolysis to split the water into gas'
Now go and and ask any metric pass who paid any attention to chemistry lesson that distilled water without a presence of an electrolyte would not be a very thermodynamically sound process and would incur heavy energy loss i.e. less than 100% efficiency from the very word go (if at all efficient)
Then there is the fact that you just cannot claim to break the universal 'law' of thermodynamics and conservation of energy. These are not theories but laws that corroborate with physical existence of you and me.
Having said all that, the nation whose 'father of science' (AQ Khan) fails to understand even the basics of scientific reasoning and supports this fraudster based on an article published in the Reader's digest some 30 years ago probably deserves to be made a mockery out of.
Please don't let this guy run away with your hopes, aspirations and money and please find yourselves a better 'father of science'
As far I can tell, this is probably not possible, at the same time I am no scientist. But I am just surprised that there has been so many demonstrations and talks shows surrounding this.
Why cant they just get this guy to put his kit on a random car and see if it works. Thats all we need.. really.
Pakistanis have to realise that con men are not inventors. In India, one fellow claimed that he made petrol from some herbs and claimed lots publicity till the profs in IIT put his claim to test. You know the results, the con man just failed miserably to prove his claims.
Uncomfortable yet true, the last paragraph sums it all up quite aptly.
The person who wrote the editorial seems to have forgotten that electrolysis is no feat to achieve...The process is described in every 8th class science book!
Well if it's true and an invention then put it up in reputable scientific journal. Get patent rights and develop. If not, then these fake scientist have no business in playing with fellow country mens emotions
right on target. thank you ET for raising a voice of sanity. electronic media has again shown its immaturity. I am also shocked at the majority of Pakistani scientific community for being so gullible. What kind of scientists are we producing? It is brave of ET to talk aboutr Dr Abdus Salam, our true hero, who is almost erased from the national memory. well done ET
The irony of this whole episode is that it was media who first created a hype by mindlessly breaking news of the so-called discovery. Not only that it turned out to be totally uninformed on a vital technology issue, it also proved itself dumb and forgetful. For not long ago, a certain Phd doctor of dubious credentials made headlines with a similar invention and was much lauded by certain tv channels. Then abruptly the whole thing vanished into thin air as comments on the Internet exposed the doctor, and media as per its wont got on with more sensationalism.
And now this repetition of sorts where even govt. ministers deciding not to be outdone by others, joined the rat race. The worrying aspect is that had they not, the same media would have kicked up even more storm over the govt's incompetence and insensitivity on "talent recognition" and such issues.
Time we all learn to induce some foresight to our response time in tackling surprising situations.
A fine editorial. All and any scientific claim needs to be approached using a healthy dose of skepticism and following the scientific method of conducting through experimentation without bias to support a discovery or invention. This 'invention', although sound, uses a method which wastes a lot of energy in splitting the water molecule, compared to just using petrol, diesel or some other fuel.
It is pathetic to see Talat Hussain,Hamid Mir becoming poster boys for this "Water Kit" that allegedly splits water into Hydrogen and Oxygen and Hydrogen drives the internal combustion engine of a car.So you add camel to donkey and run a car on electricity! pathetic!
You seem to be one bitter individual. I do realize that Abdul Salam should be given his due, but seriously give yourself a break. I personally have not looked into this Water Car news, but it seems people far n wide seem to taking out their daggers and trying to slaughter that individual. If it was a blander, it will come out - It seems anything is a major news in Pakistan.
As per the visuals I have seen, the inventor is splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using the water kit and piping the mixture into the engine. The splitting of course, is powered by an external battery. The inventor is saying this mixture can be used instead of petroleum.
I nevertheless found the inventors lack of understanding of basic laws of physics very disturbing.
at least some work is being done in Pakistan, whether its an old or new invention that is not the matter of debate! what matters is the fact an innovation can be used by local people for the betterment of our future. The article is just too pessimistic & fails to address the real purpose behind the ideas being used in real world situation. it works or it does not, that is another matter but it will surely help in progression of new tech.
It's a pity, that we as a nation, have stooped to such low levels of illiteracy, that opinion makers like Mr. Mir, starts supporting, such a lofty claims made by the engineer, without any scientific backing. Unless an authorized body/ organization, rectifies, the claims made by engineer waqar, it is extremely immature, to propagate this concept on national media. The attempt to promote engr waqar is extremely counter productive, as it not only points to the lack of basic knowledge among the so called educated people in our society. It also highlights the fact, that, how very easily, any one who has access to the media, can run baseless propaganda for any ideas of their own, without supporting it with scientific proofs
The ‘invention’ of the water kit, if real, would solve the real life problems of people in Pakistan as well as the world at large. Discovery of Higgs boson has no such immediate applicablity.
