Action ordered against illegal slaughter

District admins order action against unregulated slaughter.

A campaign against illegal slaughter houses was started on Friday in the Bahawalpur and Faisalabad districts.


In Bahawalpur, the District Livestock Officer Dr Muhammad Yaqoob Anjum and Slaughter House Superintendent Dr Muhammad Gulzar and Veterinary Officer Dr Arshad took action on the directions of the commissioner against butchers slaughtering cattle at places other than the designated abattoir.

Police raided a house in Melay Wali Gali on Friday morning and arrested a butcher, Muhammad Akbar.


DLO Dr Yaqoob told The Express Tribune that a fake livestock department stamp was also seized. He said dozens of kilogrammes of meat were also seized. He said a case had been registered at the Baghdadul Jadeed police station. Slaughter House Superintendent Dr Gulzar said slaughtering animals at other than an approved location was a crime.

Separately, the Faisalabad DCO announced a Rs15,000 reward for citizens who report illegal slaughter houses.

Addressing an eight-member delegation of the Beef Merchants Association, including its senior vice president Muhammad Iqbal and general secretary Hasan Raza on Friday, he said action will be taken against government officials found to be facilitating illegal slaughter houses. He said the practice of adding water to meat will also be checked. He ordered officials to complete the white wash in Madanpura slaughter house overnight and replace the wooden blocks and strings to used suspend slaughtered animals with steel girders and hooks.

Sadiq ordered DO (Municipal Services) Anwar Saeed to cancel tenders in the proposed project of tiling water tanks in the slaughter house.  He asked Municipal Sub Engineer Abdul Hameed to disconnect the water supply lines used to add water to meat.

He ordered that new platforms be created at the Millat Town slaughter house. He also directed the Works EDO to provide an excavator to de-silt the drain serving it.
