Thar coalfields: Land allotted for 30 power projects
Installed capacity of 1,947 megawatts (MW) in the Thar coalfield
KARACHI:
Sindh government has allotted the land for 30 power projects with an installed capacity of 1,947 megawatts (MW) in the Thar coalfield of which nine projects commissioned on a fast track basis are expected to obtain commercial operations date before June 2013 and start feeding 800MW power to the grid by June 2013, said Sindh Investment Board (SIB) Chairman Muhammad Zubair Motiwala. Speaking at SBI’s meeting, Motiwala said that serious efforts are being made for containment of energy crisis in Pakistan through multiple measures. Other than promoting investments in Thar coal and Sindh’s wind corridor, the SBI is working closely with the private sector to examine progress in solar energy. He said that coal is the new energy future of the province and the country.
