Earlier, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had officially communicated its preference to have Ebrahim administer the office of the CEC on July 20, 2012.
However, on July 18, he had requested through a letter addressed to the registrar of the Supreme Court that his oath-taking ceremony should be rescheduled on July 23 or “any other date in the week, as per the convenience of the chief justice of Pakistan.”
Snubbing his critics while speaking to the media after the oath-taking ceremony, the CEC said that one should not consider his age as a setback, but see his extensive experience.
Justice (retd) Ebrahim said that holding transparent elections would be his “last mission”.
When asked if the ECP was ready to hold general elections, the CEC said that the commission was ready, however, it was the prime minister’s prerogative to announce the date of the elections.
Responding to a question regarding the code-of-conduct formed by the ECP, Ebrahim said that the commission had a “great team” and that it was confident in holding transparent and rigging-free elections.
A 12-member parliamentary committee, headed by federal minister Syed Khurshid Shah, had reached consensus on Justice (retd) Ebrahim’s name out of six nominees as the CEC.
Ebrahim was one of the three names nominated by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). Justice (retd) Nasim Sikander and acting CEC Justice Shakirullah Jan were the other two nominated by the party.

Old is Gold. Now we have the best with consensus. Don't forget recently one who was elected as PM with consensus was sent home by those who are not brought in with consensus. God save this wise person from devils in our system. Truly speaking, Fakhru Bhai will only work according to the constitution. He is not a person who goes after fame or glorification from any who may matter during the elections. Congrats, Sir.
I want to see the headline in the newspapers day after the general elections - "Alliance the loser, the EC (FGI) the winner".

What a horribly rude comment. Surely you know nothing about this man nor do you care about the intergrity of our nation. I hope you understand that 'old' people continue to make significant contributions to society and have lived through so much more than you can probably imagine.
Why should age, sex, gender, race or any other morally arbitrary factor determine how qualified you are for a job?
What does one do with experience alone, dear sir Mr Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim, if you can't even narrate all that experience in a coherent manner and fail to articulate yourself in all your public utterances. I mean you are good man but you are also much too old, feable and frail. Would you be able to even find your office on your own from the Islamabad Airport or back from there when needed no more?

One accidental good decision by the present coalition (appointment of the CEC) might cost it the next elections. He will be given a hard time no doubt while carrying out his duties.
