While speculation on early elections is rife, President Asif Ali Zardari has asked leaders of opposition political parties to wait eight more months.
The president claimed that the government was under no threat and would complete its tenure, which ends in March 2013. “I will request my impassioned friends to wait eight more months,” sources quoted President Zardari as saying in his address to Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) ministers and senior party leaders at Bilawal House on Friday.
During the meeting, the concerns of the coalition partners and Lyari were discussed. The president is also said to have resolved that the incumbent government would set a new precedent by holding free and fair elections in the country, adding that the PPP had always avoided politics of confrontation.
Sources privy to proceedings of the meeting told The Express Tribune that the president, while referring to the complaints of coalition partners MQM and PML-F, told party leaders that “[PPP] have to jointly contest the elections and make a coalition government in the upcoming set. You have to resolve their issues.”
MNA Abdul Qadir Patel, who is also president of PPP Karachi division, briefed President Zardari about the growing resentment among the people of Lyari as well as a huge public gathering organised by Awami Tehreek along with leaders of the defunct Peoples Amn Committee (PAC).
The president is said to have asked party leaders to woo the enraged people of the area. “An operation is not the solution; you have to negotiate with the enraged people. The issue of Lyari is political and it cannot be resolved administratively,” President Zardari was quoted as saying. Informed that the people of Lyari wanted cases against PAC leaders, including Uzair Baloch, withdrawn, the president asked Patel to initiate negotiations in this regard. Party leaders were also instructed to organise a public gathering in Lyari soon after Eidul Fitr.
“Lyari is PPP’s fort and we cannot lose it at any cost,” President Zardari told the meeting.
He is also said to have asked PPP leaders to expedite the process to establish a local government system. A meeting regarding development work on the shrine of Sufi saint Lal Shahbaz Qalandar, was also held. The president expressed his reservation over the slow pace of work and directed the concerned officials to compete the work within three months. “Every time I come here and get a briefing on it and listen to you people saying the work will be completed soon,” he added.

It means that country will suffer bad governance for 8 more months.
Eight months means premature baby. I think one more month should be added so that we may know exactly the face of this new born democracy ( I mean technocratic setup). I hope all goes well and democracy will be allowed to flourish in our country. We don't need any new experiments in terror.
@Gileeto: Imran Khan is also the silver lining in the dark clouds for Pakistan and its nation as well.....
The losers are already thinking of running away from elections and are talking backdoor methods to gain power. Let there be elections after the term and at time and we would support the next govt. That is the only way forward.
The opposition should have accepted the invitation to talks when it was offered by the Prime Minister. Now after Gilani Junior's win despite the united opposition from all quarters political or otherwise PPP will look forward to consolidate its vote bank further before calling it a day.
Great decision by Prsident to hold elections on time. Change mongers should show pateince.
Hail the NRO president!
@Atif Yousufzai:
you are right brother...but unfortunately the honest man at the helm, pervez musharraf, was outed from his office and the people voted for the PPP, knowing full well what their performance had been in the past. they are regretting it now .
@Khalid Rao: don't under estimate un or poorly educated voters, they understand what is real Democracy Word Stand for......???? the problem is that the Real Democracy did not grow in the Country.
@Opt: you are enjoying the fruits of Martial Law . . . ????
@Atif Yousufzai: PPP or No PPP, depreciation of Pak rupee is inevitable under any circumstances as the war against terrorism is going on . . . ????
Time is ticking, few more months will also pass, then what, Swiss courts and Pakistani courts are ready for you. IK will not be able to help you, does not matter how much you sport gainst PML N. next governament will be PML N. enjoy this limited time. All this sorry with BB,
@Adil Ahmed Dayo: Your +'s are on the wrong sides, My friend! The elections will be between PPP and the "No Sitarays" (IJI) of 2012.
"Khalid Raos" of the northern Punjab are in a self denial delusional mode. They will get a shock of their life on the election day, when Pakistanis will bury the sermons, verdicts, observations, speeches, and poetry of select judges, who continued to victimize their political opponents, and kept on playing to the tunes of the establishment.
@Khalid Rao: In the next 8 months, there will be increasingly more and more relief to the poor people. The situation is very similar to 1970, when the Doltanas were used to drawing room politics, continued to doubt the wisdom of the common ordinary people. This time too the affluent "Khalid Raos" of northern Punjab think they represent the entire Pakistan, and they are wiser than the rest. Their delusional attitude casts a curtain in front of their eyes; they think everyone in Pakistan is as genius as them, when they buy memogate, the Haj Scandal, biased judiciary/media, contempt of court, and the most ridiculous testimony of the main accused Dr. Jumma, while selectively rejecting the Arsalan gate, Salman Taseer Murder, Taseer Junior kidnapping etc. Saner voices with no prior prejudices knew all along that all this was a farce just to rally the "genius" right-wing voters. These rightwingers will have their shock on the election day as well.
What shame you are saying, PPP won the election of a person who has already an allegation from the court with a arrest warrant. .What you expect from a voters like this, anything my friend? Democracy need at least educated and responsible voters. These voters are not sensible,I should not say this as democracy is the majority so PPP has it .You blame them with all allegation still they have majority you can do nothing,Because this N league was not sensible in the past ,every time they were fooled by the president or the PM to save the democracy + they have given them Punjab Government.to make their face dirty at all time.
Sometime I feel if president is that much clever and cunning he should play some games with the international powers too,but he can not as he is only clever and cunning in side Pakistan outside he is week on moral grounds.
The Next Elections Will be PPP + PML-N +MQM +PML-F +JUI +PML-Q (Status Quo ) Vs PTI.. Mang raha hai PAkistan IMRAN KHAN IMRAN KHAN ....!!!!
Oh how the English speaking crowd hates the PPP. They forget that this party gets the most votes. No wonder they'd rather live under martial law which they see as representing their interests better.
Oh man I am ready to live under martial law. This govt is killing us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
why? Do you have anything left in Pakistan or any department left in government which you pppp's haven't yet been able to Ruin?!
Agreed with skunk, 4 years are more than enough, a competent government can achieve its set goals within 2-3years' time where as incompetent governments like pppp's can't do but ruin country.
There is competition between two political parties which are capable of winning elections i.e PPP and PML(N). (Sorry to say that PTI has yet to prove its worth in this field). When we do comparison of these two parties, PPP has clear edge over Nawaz League. So it can be anticipated that PPP will get more seats than Nawaz League and PTI. Since Zardari has the compromising qualities, he will succeed in making alliance and forming the government. Nawaz and Imran are proudy, arrogants so they will not be able to make alliance. So in case democracy is not derailed, we should expect another tenure of PPP.
As elections are getting closer Mr. President is getting closer to Lyari :)
Wait eight more months so all the corrupt leaders are able to transfer their accumulated money from Pakistani Accounts... Shame on this government..
@Adil: Huh? you must be out of your mind!
Nawaz sharif is the only hope for Pakistan!!!
If the armed forces of the country are loyal, they should intervene and stop this, this is seriously damaging the country
The only thing the PPP has set out to do is complete its '5 year period.' After that, they will snap at everybody by saying, "See we completed our term, and did nothing."
The term of five years is anachronistic today and needs to be reduced to four. The world is moving ahead too fast and for 'doing nothing Pakistanis,' five years is excessive. Salams
Old chap.......8 months or whatever got to go! got to go!!!.
PPP is going to engulf the country in next eight months under the dynamic leadership of........so sooner the free and fair elections better it would be for the country and nation
Sir, Mercy please, it was from year 2000 to 2007 when dollar maintained to 60 rupees, i am afraid if you complete your 8 more months it will reach 120.
Why opposition is making haste in this regard because when there was resignations' time the opposition played the role of friendly opposition. And PML-N played the role of coalition party with PPP till 2010 and after 2010 PML-N has been playing the friendly opposition party's role till now.Now why can't PML-N wait till March 2013??????
Okay, hold the elections in eight months. But a neutral caretaker government is a must in the interim to make sure that the elections are not rigged. This is the need of the hour as the present government has failed.
Take that!
