Lyari violence: Two cases against gang leaders declared dormant
Habib Jan Baloch, Taju and Umar Kutchi could not be arrested.
KARACHI:
Two cases against Habib Jan Baloch and Taj Mohammad and Umar Kutchi, relating to the gang-fuelled violence in Lyari were declared dormant on Friday after the accused could not be arrested.
Taj Mohammad is an uncle of Peoples Amn Committee’s late founder Rehman ‘Dakait’ and reportedly controls the Nawa Lane area for the group, while Umar Kutchi is responsible for Nayabad. Baloch is the chief of Friends of Lyari – which was earlier called the Peoples Amn Committee and was banned by the government.
One of the cases, in which 14 men were nominated, was registered at Chakiwara police station.
Their names are: Jabbar alias Langra, Aziz Sirbazi, Jibrail, Nasir, Faisal, Fahad Pathan, Basit alias Moto, Irfan Qureshi, Zubair Baloch, Sardar Asif, Sarwar, Zaheer, Ghaffar Mota and Javed.
The men were booked for attempted murder, using criminal force to prevent public servants from working and common intent.
The FIR also named the men on charges of violating two sections of the Explosives Act.
The second case had been filed at the Kalakot police station. It was registered against 20 men, including Habib Jan Baloch, Taj Mohammad alias Taju, and Umar Kutchi. In this case as well the men were accused of attempted murder, assault and common intent, with the addition of “causing mischief”.
Both the cases were declared dormant after non-bailable warrants were issued and the investigating officers testified that they were unable to arrest the accused men.
Earlier in May, at least four cases were registered over the violence in Lyari and adjoining areas.
They too were declared dormant because the police could not arrest any of the men nominated. On May 29, the Napier Road police testified in the Anti-Terrorism Court that it had not been able to find Uzair Jan or Umer Kutchi in a case filed against them.
