Biometric registration: Canada seeks to restore system

The Biometric system was designed to monitor movement of individuals across the border.

QUETTA:
A seven member delegation from the Canadian High Commission visited the border town of Chaman on Wednesday to review the Biometric system installed at the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. The Biometric system, installed in 2008 with support from the Canadian High Commission, was designed to monitor movement of individuals across the border. However, vehement opposition by Afghan authorities resulted in discontinuation of the computerised system. According to official sources, the delegation’s visit was aimed at assessing the current status of the system and review possibilities of regularising cross-border movement through the restoration of computerised registration.
