Defence ministry gets two weeks for a reply

The chief justice said if a reply was not filed by September 3, the defence secretary would be summoned in person.

LAHORE:
Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court on Thursday gave two weeks to the Ministry of Defence for a reply in a petition seeking recovery of a missing businessman of Lahore.

The chief justice said if a reply was not filed by September 3, the defence secretary would be summoned in person.

Earlier, the Punjab home secretary informed the court that the missing businessman was not being detained at the provincial government’s orders.

The chief justice was hearing the petition by Ms Naureen Ijaz who is seeking recovery of her husband from alleged detention by secret agencies. The interior ministry had earlier said that  none of the 15 departments and agencies working under it was holding the man.

The petitioner submitted that her husband, Ijaz Hussain, had a rubber parts business in Kot Lakhpat. She said it was a small unit, employing 15 workers one of them was Qari Obaidullah.

She said on July 6, four plainclothesmen had arrived at the place and asked for Obaidullah. Following some conversation with Obaidullah, they had taken him and her husband with them. She said the family had moved from pillar to post in search of her husband but in vain. On July 8, she said, local newspapers had reported that security agencies had arrested two terrorism suspects, including Qari Obaidullah from Azadi Chowk.

She said her husband was innocent and if the security agencies had arrested him, they should produce him before a court of law. She prayed the court to issue directions for her husband’s production before the court and for setting him free.
