Nadal, Federer advance in Cincinnati
Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray have advanced to the third round of the ATP Cincinnati Masters.
CINCINNATI:
Top-ranked Rafael Nadal, world number two Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray have advanced to the third round of the ATP Cincinnati Masters.
Reigning Wimbledon and French Open champion Nadal advanced with a 6-2, 7-5 victory against 83rd-ranked American Taylor Dent to reach the third round of the $3 million hardcourt event, a tuneup for the US Open.
The Spaniard will next face Frenchman Julien Benneteau, who eliminated Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka 6-4, 6-2.
Meanwhile, Federer advanced when Uzbek qualifier Denis Istomin suffered a right foot injury and retired after only 28 minutes with 16-time Grand Slam champion Federer leading 5-2.
“It gives me an extra day to get into it. From that standpoint, it’s good,” said Federer.
In another match, Djokovic defeated compatriot Viktor Troicki 6-3, 7-5 and will face Argentina’s David Nalbandian, a winner two weeks ago at Washington.
Murray beat France’s Jeremy Chardy 6-3, 6-7 (3/7), 6-2, to book a third-round match against Latvian Ernests Gulbis, who beat Austrian Jurgen Melzer 6-7 (8/10), 6-3, 7-6 (7/5).
Meanwhile, in the men’s doubles round Polish pair Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski defeated Pakistan tennis star Aisamul Haq and his Indian partner Rohan Bopanna 7-5, 7- 6(7-3) in the pre quarter-finals. Earlier, the pair defeated Rajeev Ram and Bobby Reynolds 6-3, 1-6, 10-4.
