Asghar Khan petition: 'Talks meant to strengthen parliament, weaken judiciary not useful'

Heading a five-member bench, the chief justice said that Bangladesh model will not be brought in the country.

ISLAMABAD:
Hearing the petition filed by Air Marshal (retd) Asghar Khan in the Supreme Court on Monday, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry said that talks meant to strengthen the parliament and debilitate the judiciary are not useful, Express News reported.

Heading a five-member bench, the chief justice said that Bangladesh model will not be brought in the country.

Attorney General Irfan Qadir informed the court that the Law ministry has obtained the Mehran Bank report.

He further said that a notification regarding the formation of a political cell in the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) has not been received yet. Justice Khilji Arif Hussain observed that if the notification is not obtained then it will create problems in the hearing of the case.

Justice Jawad S Khwaja said that it is the institutions that are important, not individuals. He added that the court should be informed if a political cell ever existed within the ISI and whether it was functional.

The attorney general said that he will inform the court after asking the government.
