LAHORE:

The Health Department on Friday issued transfer and posting orders of several teaching hospital professors in the Punjab.

Allama Iqbal Medical College (AIMC) Principal Dr Javed Akram has been posted as the technical adviser of medical education. Prof Mehmood Shaukat, professor of Pediatrics Surgery at the King Edward Medical University, has been given charge as the AIMC principal, instead.

Dr Khawaja Haroon Khursheed, professor of Pediatrics at Nishtar Medical College, Multan has been transferred and posted as the Quaid-i-Azam Medical College, Bahawalpur principal; Dr Khalid Abbas Bukhari, professor of Pediatrics and principal of Quaid-i-Azam Medical College Bahawalpur was relieved of his charge with immediate effect.

Separately, King Edward Medical University Vice Chancellor Dr Asad Aslam Khan has been given an additional charge as Mayo Hospital medical superintendent as Dr Zahid Pervaiz is on leave.

Dr Khan is already serving as a VC, pro-VC and professor of Ophthalmology at the Mayo Hospital, director of the Punjab Institute of Preventive Ophthalmology, principal of College of Allied Vision Sciences and national coordinator for Prevention of Blindness. A Health Department official, requesting not to be mentioned by name, said that a list of “troublemakers” was formed during the Young Doctors Association (YDA) Punjab strike. More transfers were on the card, he said.

He said Dr Akram had been informed that he has been alleviated. “The post assigned to him, however, does not have any office and handsome privileges so far,” he added.

He said, “Medical superintendents in teaching hospitals have been asked to prepare lists of post graduate resident trainees who have completed their trainings and can now be transferred.”

Parliamentary Secretary on Health Dr Saeed Elahi said that Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has decided to restore the ‘bright traditions and values of the Health Department’.

“The department was ruined by the previous government by appointing corrupt, junior and incompetent officers on the senior posts. As a result, the Department showed marked deterioration in standards of delivery,” he said.

Elahi said the government had now decided to rehabilitate the Health Department so that it can provide best health facilities to the poor.

“Seniority and merit will be considered top principle while making postings and transfers of principals of medical colleges, medical superintendents, executive district officers and other high officials,” he said.
