MULTAN:

Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) office was vandalised on Wednesday bya crowd protesting against the lack of functional sewer in their areas.

The protesters said they were residents of Sameejabad, Mumtazabad and Arifabad. They blocked the road for three hours, broke the office windows and attacked vehicles belonging to Wasa employees.

They complained that sewer water had not been drained from their areas for more than two months.

They said they had been protesting the matter for 15 days but the authorities remained indifferent. They carried clubs and batons and burnt tyres. Police were called and forced the protesters out of the offices.

One of the protesters said there were more than 200 houses in the affected areas. He said sewer water had entered the houses and was bubbling from drains and flushes inside the houses.

Some of the protesters said they had started sleeping in the mosque. Others said water supply was suspended for most of the day.

They told the Multan Development Authority director general, Mumtaz Qureshi, sent to appease them, that some 20,000 people were affected.

They dispersed after the director general assured them that the matter will be resolved soon.

Later, talking to The Express Tribune, Qureshi said sewer pipes in the area will soon be repaired.

He said he had been told by Wasa officials that a 48-inch sewer pipe in the area had leaked. He said Wasa teams had already been sent to work on the project.

For the time being, he said, he had ordered two motors to extract water from the affected areas.

“There will be relief before the night fall,” he said.
