2012 World Twenty20: ‘Kamran was warned before being named in probables’

Out-of-favour keeper included in 30-man squad alongwith Razzaq, Nazir

KARACHI:
Kamran Akmal, who has been under scrutiny by the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) Integrity Committee, was named in the 30-man preliminary squad for the World Twenty20.

Kamran has not been part of the national side since lat year’s World Cup but his omission had more to do with his pending clearance by the PCB than his form as he faced allegations of match-fixing. While the PCB refrained from making a statement on the matter, Kamran’s inclusion in the squad confirms the green signal for the wicket-keeper.

‘No evidence against Kamran’

An official close to the integrity committee said that the body failed to find concrete evidence against the player.

“As there was nothing against Kamran, the committee was told that no player can be banned on the basis of suspicion only,” the official told The Express Tribune. “Kamran’s name has been dragged in on various occasions and that is what the committee questioned him about. He was handed a warning and told to stay clear of controversies.”

Apart from Kamran, the PCB has named Sarfraz Ahmed and Shakeel Ansar in the squad. There was no place for ODI and Test captain Misbahul Haq.

Selection process to start after team’s return: Qasim

Pakistan’s chief selector Iqbal Qasim confirmed to The Express Tribune that the pool was formed keeping the players’ Twenty20 expertise in mind.

“These players are our best in this format,” said Qasim. “Razzaq is experienced and he can be very useful if he’s fit and in good form. I will meet the team management on July 13 or 14 to discuss the final squad. Players  that we select for the Twenty20s against Australia will most probably be retained.”
