KARACHI:
A delegation of the Sindh government signed several memorandums of understanding (MoUs) worth $2 billion with different business houses in Scotland, on Tuesday. The delegation was led by Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad and comprised federal and provincial ministers.
Speaking to The Express Tribune, Minister for Youth Affairs Faisal Subzwari said the aim of the delegation was to let the world know that, “Pakistan is open for investment”. Contracts were signed between Scottish business groups, the Government and Port Qasim Authority, KPT, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and Karachi Water & Sewerage Board. These included solid waste management, a sewerage treatment plan, and a de-salination programme which would provide 100 million gallons of water per day.

Desalination is a very inefficient and extremely power intensive method of delivering water for drinking needs. There are much cheaper options that should be exploited first. Waste management is definitely the correct step and extremely needed in Karachi.
Hate to sound old here, but there were tons of MOUs signed during previous PPP and PML governments. How many of them came through?
Still, congratulations. Hope these new MOUs come through.
Good work by Sindh Goverment especially Dr.Ishrat ul Ibad.
The story says Scottish Business groups but did not named the groups. We should know the names of the firms with which the MoUs have been signed. I doubt the existence of such MoUs. General Elections are approaching and ruling parties in Sindh want to show that they are working with foreign Organizations for the betterment of common Sindhis like Punjab Government did collaborated with Turkish Firms. MQM and PPP (Sindh) are just staging this drama to show that they are sincere to the people of Sindh which is not true.
Frankly I like what read about all these 'agreements and MOU and I consider all these moves positive. I'm hopiing that they progress into real things. Dr. Ishrat Ebad Khan has my admiraions and support as a citizen, the water & power issues are so close to every citizens mind and day to day living conditions, it's admirable that our government has finally decided to move and do some thing to alleviate this perpetual problem. The governor should also look into the possibility of potential cooperation for ‘Underwater turbines', or tidal turbines, this technology is like watery windmills that convert kinetic energy from tides into electricity. In my view with the help of a marine energy source Karachi can become the “Saudi Arabia of offshore renewables”.
Let's hope the projects are implemented instead accumulating dust in government offices!
