G-B tour: USAID team visits library, irrigation project

A delegation of senior The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) officials on Monday paid a visit to the municipal library of Gilgit, which received a grant of $30,000 under the agency’s Ambassadors’ Fund Programme recently.


“The grant was awarded to the library on the request of Gilgit administration to provide the library with modern technology, equipment and facilities,” said a spokesperson for USAID.

As part of the grant, the library received four computers, two scanners, two printers, internet connection, one generator, library software, two-card catalogue cabinets and construction of a wooden picture gallery furnished with precious historical photos, he added.


The delegation, comprising USAID Mission’s Deputy Head in Pakistan Karen Freemen, Programme Specialist Sarah Creedon and other officials, took interest in the historical books and pictures at the library that houses around 20,000 titles on diverse subjects. It was built in 1877 under the then Political Agent of Gilgit, Lieutenant Colonel John Bidulph.

The librarian, Sherbaz Ali Barcha, briefed them about  the books and rare photographs of historical personalities. Later, Karen inaugurated an under construction building.

Earlier on Sunday, the delegation met community representatives of Gupis in Ghizer district and visited a project constructed with the grant of USAID.

The agency has provided $141,659 for construction of a 7-kilometre-long irrigation channel that will bring 6,000 kanals of barren land under cultivation and improve the economic life of the people of the district.

He further said that 500 households  comprising 4,890 individuals will benefit from the project.
