Prayers abound: Edhi under observation at SIUT, to be discharged soon

The philanthropist reportedly fainted after seeing bodies of Turbat violence victims.

KARACHI:

“I am shocked over the killings of these innocent people. They were just going to earn livelihood,” said Abdul Sattar Edhi in a faint voice as he spoke to The Express Tribune over the phone on Monday.

The country’s best-known humanitarian was hospitalised at the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) on Monday after suffering from weakness. A day earlier, Edhi had fainted for a while after seeing the bodies of the victims who were gunned down in Turbat while on their way to Iran.

“Bullets have become so cheap and it has become so easy to kill people,” said Edhi. “My heart cries out when I see this happening in the country. I appeal to the people to pray for the country and also for my good health.”

While explaining the cause of Edhi’s hospitalisation, the philanthropist’s son, Faisal Edhi, said that the carnage in Turbat had also physically affected his father. “He already had a kidney problem, and the shock further aggravated his situation. There was also an increase of chemicals in his urine.” However, Faisal added that his father was under observation at SIUT and was not in any serious condition.

On the other hand, Dr Baksh Ali, an associate professor at SIUT, said that Edhi had suffered from dehydration, and that he was being given fluids through an intravenous line.

He is expected to be discharged on Monday night.
