Veteran Kashmiri leader laid to rest

His body was brought to his native city of Mirpur from Islamabad after being flown in from Great Britain.

Veteran Marxist ideologue, writer and the founding chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Peoples National Party (JKPNP) Barrister Qurban Ali was laid to rest in his ancestral graveyard here on Sunday in the presence of a large number of mourners.


His body was brought to his native city of Mirpur from Islamabad after being flown in from Great Britain at 8:30am.

His funeral prayer was offered at the central Eidgah Graveyard. Red guards mostly comprising party workers presented a guard of honour to the great leader. His coffin was draped in a red and white-striped JKPNP flag. Barrister Qurban Ali died in a London hospital on Friday evening after a protracted illness.


Thousands of people from all walks of life from across Azad Kashmir and Islamabad including the heads of various political parties and progressive nationalist groups attended the funeral.

Prominent among those who participated in the funeral included Jammu and Kashmir Supreme Court Chief Justice Muhammad Azam Khan and president Jammu and Kashmir Liberation League President Justice (retd) Abdul Majeed Malik.

They paid tribute to the JKPNP founding chairman, who strived for the unification and independence of Kashmir and the rights of downtrodden people in the state and other oppressed peoples of the world. He remained steadfast and committed to his ideals and ideology throughout his life.  The void created by his death will be difficult to fill, they said.

Others who attended the funeral and paid their last homage to the respected leader were Jammu and Kashmir National Liberation Front chief Shaukat Maqbool Butt, JKPNP leaders Raja Habibur Rehman, Professor Nazirul Haq, Nazish, Professor Sikandar Azam and Advocate Farid Awan, Labour Party leader Advocate Nisar Shah, JKNLC President Arif Shahid, former JKNLF chairman Sardar Sagheer Khan, Muhammad Ramzan Dutt, Jammu and Kashmir Plebiscite Front leaders Nasir Ansari and Muhammad Azeem Dutt, PPP (Shaheed Bhutto) AJK chapter president Chaudhry Munir Hussain and officials and members of the district bar association, members of the business community and others attended the funeral.
