Flood waters expected to recede by months end

A grim forecast for the more than 20 million living homeless or otherwise affected by the deluge.

According to the country's top meteorologist, flood waters will not recede fully until the end of August, a grim forecast for the more than 20 million living homeless or otherwise affected by the deluge.

Senior meteorologist Arif Mahmood said on Wednesday that river torrents were still heading to major cities such as Hyderabad and Sukkur in the south and could cause still more floods.

He said, however, that there were no heavy rains predicted this week.

The scale of the disaster has badly strained the government, police and army, which are handling much of the relief effort. Militants clashed with police overnight in the northwest, seeking to exploit the state's weaknesses as it dealt with the floods.
