Under water: Acres of land inundated after breach

A ten-foot wide breach occurred near Sher Mohammad Pitafi village between RD-68 and 69 on Wednesday early morning.

SUKKUR:

A village and hundreds of acres of agricultural land came under water due to the breach of an embankment in Dahar Wah near Mirpur Mathelo.

A ten-foot wide breach occurred near Sher Mohammad Pitafi village between RD-68 and 69 on Wednesday early morning. Irrigation officials were informed by the villagers but no action was taken and the breach resultantly widened to 40 feet.

This caused water to gush into the village resulting in 200 katcha houses and crops of sugarcane and paddy all coming under water.

A protest was staged by Ali Akbar Pitafi, Mohammad Ali Pitafi and others against the irrigation officials. Speaking to the press, the protesters said that the irrigation officials had been informed as soon as the breach occurred yet they did not take it seriously. They complained that illegal outlets had been constructed by influential people due to which the embankment had weakened.   SDO irrigation Riaz Mangi said that officials were sent to the scene immediately and the breach had been plugged with the help of the villagers.
