International day against torture: ‘Introduce legislation to end practice’

Demonstration organised by Anti-Torture Alliance (ATA) Pakistan on the occasion of International Day against Torture

ISLAMABAD:
Human right activists have called for introducing legislation against torture to curb the menace, which has negative physical and psychological effects on many innocent citizens. The demand was made on Tuesday at a protest outside National Press Club. The demonstration was organised by the Anti-Torture Alliance (ATA) Pakistan on the occasion of International Day against Torture.  Protesters were of the view that such a law will help hold the police and other law enforcement agencies accountable for kidnapping and torturing people and will also help end many human rights violations. Mehergarh Programs Director Maliha Husain said police torture under the name of police remand, is a colonial legacy and a brutal way of investigations.
