This is with reference to “There’s something about Zardari” (August 16) by Basil Nabi Malik.

I agree that we, as a nation, deserve the mess that we’re in. A nation with a literacy level barely in double digits cannot be expected to do anything more. The burning question is whether we are ready for democracy. Have we not seen enough civilian governments plundering every available asset the country holds for their personal gain? And while I’m the first one to raise my hand and say the majority of us are scallywags and cheats it still doesn’t justify corruption at the highest level.


We’re a nation of illiterate cheats so we’ll choose someone who will let us go on cheating. I think we need someone to scream at us, rebuke us, point out our faults to us – so that we can get our collective act together. Is that the army? I don’t know. Well written piece, though. Very insightful.
