Killings continue: Policeman, ASWJ man among three shot dead
Bodies of two missing Baloch men found.
KARACHI:
The bodies keep on piling in the violence-prone city as three more missing men turned up dead on Monday while a policeman was among three others gunned down.
In North Karachi, a police constable was gunned down by unidentified attackers near Anda Morr. Khawaja Ajmer Nagri police termed the murder of 32-year-old Nisar Abbasi a targeted killing. SHO Chauhdry Afzal said the victim was posted with the Special Investigation Unit police.
Baldia Town was on the edge after the bodies of two missing Baloch men were found from Swat Colony and Saeedabad. Unconfirmed reports suggested that the victims were supporters of the outlawed Peoples Amn Committee (PAC).
The bodies were shifted to the Civil hospital, where they were identified as 35-year-old Naveed Hanif and 25-year-old Ghulam Nabi.
West Zone SSP Amir Farooqui said that the victims lived in Lyari. They along with over half a dozen others had gone for a picnic to Winder, Balochistan on Sunday, when unidentified men kidnapped three of the men. “Two have been found dead while another is still missing,” the police officer added.
Sources in the police told The Express Tribune that the victims’ families were affiliated with the Shaheed Bhutto group of the Pakistan Peoples Party. Initial investigation suggests that the PAC rival, Arshad Pappu group, is behind their murder as the area from where they were kidnapped is a stronghold of the gang, the sources added.
However, SSP Farooqui could neither confirm nor deny the claims. He said that the police are verifying the affiliations of the victims and the possibility of involvement of the Arshad Pappu group. “The police have to first recover the other kidnapped person,” he added.
In the Garden police limits, the tortured body of a young man was found from the Ramswami area. The identity of the victim could not be ascertained. SHO Naseeruddin Shah said that the victim was shot three times and his body dumped in a gunny bag. The body was shifted to the Edhi morgue after medico-legal formalities at the Civil hospital.
The atmosphere in New Karachi turned tense, as unidentified attackers shot dead a member of the religious outfit, Ahle Sunnat wal Jamaat (ASWJ). The police said that 28-year-old Imran aka Bata was standing at a bus stop in Godhra Camp when the assailants on motorcycles targeted him. The victim suffered multiple bullets and was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
Routine and business activities were suspended in the area as unidentified miscreants resorted to aerial firing.
ASWJ spokesman Maulana Taj Hanafi termed the killing of his organisation’s activists part of a series of sectarian targeted killings. Condemning the incident, he demanded that the government arrest the culprits behind the killing of Imran and others.
In Machar Colony, a fisherman identified as 25-year-old Jaseem was gunned down in the limits of Docks police.
Following his murder, the victim’s relatives, friends and fishermen gathered at Mauripur Road to protest. They blocked the main road by setting tyres ablaze and pelted the passing vehicles with stones. The police had to baton-charge the protesters and fire teargas shells to disperse the crowd and restore traffic.
