Another suicide?: University student found hanged in hostel room
Police suggest the 27-year-old committed suicide; detailed chemical report to be finalised.
ISLAMABAD:
A university student was found hanged from a ceiling fan in his hostel room on Thursday. Basharat Khan, 27, was an MPhil student at Air University and was living in a private hostel in sector G-10/1, according to the Ramna police.
“His roommates said he showed no signs of depression,” the investigation officer told The Express Tribune. Quoting family sources, he said that Khan failed the Central Superior Services (CSS) examination thrice and was disappointed.
He said that the cause of death will be confirmed from the detailed chemical examination of the body.
His two roommates, Sohail and Irfanullah, told the police that they had went out and left Khan alone in his hostel room. When they returned, the room was locked from the inside. They called the police when other hostellers --- through the room’s window --- saw Khan hanged from a ceiling fan.
The investigation officer said the door of the room was opened on the permission of Khan’s brother, Fida Hussain, who reached the hostel after being informed.
Khan, a native of Mardan, was shifted to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) hospital where a post mortem was carried out on his body with the consent of his family. The preliminary medical report confirmed signs of strangulation on his neck by a rope; however, a detailed chemical report will elaborate on the cause of death, the medical examiner said.
His body was handed over to his family, which took it to their hometown in Mardan for burial.
A month back, a student of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (EME) College Rawalpindi committed suicide by jumping from the roof of the campus building. The Tarnol police said he committed suicide over differences with his father as he did not want to pursue engineering studies and wanted to go abroad. His family refused to comment and did not ask the police to investigate the incident.
