‘Negligence’: Gynaecologist accused as baby dies during delivery

Nurses and birth attendants tried to handle the delivery but since there was no doctor, baby died during the delivery.

HARIPUR:

A family accused the district gynaecologist of negligence, after their baby died during delivery at the Woman and Child Hospital. They held a protest against the hospital administration and sought registration of a criminal case against the concerned doctor on Tuesday.

The PTCL Employees Union Haripur President Chanzeb Qureshi told media that his wife was admitted at the hospital with labour pains on Sunday evening. The gynaecologist on duty had prescribed a normal delivery. When the expectant mother experienced labour pains again on Monday, she was taken to the labour room but there was no gynaecologist nor any medical officer.

The nurses and birth attendants tried to handle the delivery but since there was no doctor, the baby died during the delivery. Qureshi said that when his wife was taken to labour room, he saw there was no medical officer so he contacted the Executive District Officer (EDO) Health Dr Mazhar Ali, who refused to come to the ward that was at a distance of 10 yards from his office.

During their protest, Qureshi and his relatives chanted slogans against the district gynaecologist, the female medical officer who was on duty that time and the nurses and birth attendants who took part in the delivery process. He accused them all for mishandling the case and sought registration of criminal case against EDO health Haripur, gynaecologist, female medical officer on duty and the nurses.

Later the Assistant Coordination Officer Khyzer Hayat and Medical Superintendent District Headquarters Hospital reached the Women and Children Hospital and constituted a three-member probe team comprising Dr Habibur Rehman, Dr Kibrya and Dr Yousaf, that would submit its report to the District Coordination Officer within three days.

When contacted, the gynaecologist who wished not to be named, said on the that she was on-call but was not summoned at the time of the delivery.
