Asif eyes revenge in snooker event

Pakistan number 1 to face Asjad in today’s semi-final.

KARACHI:

Pakistan number one Mohammad Asif will be looking to settle a score with Asjad Iqbal when the pair faces off in the semi-final of the Jubilee Insurance 3rd Ranking Snooker Championship at the Karachi Gymkhana today.

Asjad defeated Asif in the final of the last ranking event in May but now the top seed has set his sights on clinching this title.

“I want to beat Iqbal to restore my dominance,” Asif told The Express Tribune. “However, it won’t be easy because he’s playing really well at the moment and I hope our match proves to be an exciting one.”

After a shaky start to the tournament, Asif regrouped to advance from the group stages and then prevailed over Sharjeel Mehmood 5-2 to confirm his place in the last-four. The cueist added that his lean patch was over and hoped to be back to his best for the crucial clash with Asjad. Meanwhile, his semi-final opponent Asjad gave a taste of things to come as he outclassed third-seed Sultan Mohammad 5-0.

Shahram Changezi fended off a tough challenge from Sohail Shehzad 5-4 to make it to the semi-final as well where he will face Khurram Hussain Agha after he toppled Mohammad Jawed 5-3.

“I knew I’d be up against Agha in the semi-final and now that’s happened,” said Changezi. “Now I would like to go two steps further.”
