Sindh to obtain Rs21.25b loan from ADB
Money to be used in irrigation schemes.
KARACHI:
The Sindh Government intends to obtain a Rs21.25 billion loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), while a competent forum has approved Rs18.53 billion for a scheme titled ‘Sindh Emergency Reconstruction Project for Bunds and Canals’.
“Work on 64 schemes for flood protection embankments (bunds) is in progress, while another 12 schemes are in the process of tendering, evaluation and award,” stated the Sindh Minister for Irrigation in his response to a query by MPA Nusrat Sehar Abbasi during the question hour in the Provincial Assembly.
The minister informed the house that Rs500 million had been allocated for the installation of tube wells in the province to control water logging and salinity problems in the saline zone, and to provide additional water to tail portions of minors where there is a shortage of irrigation.
When asked by MPA Arif Mustafa Jatoi how the tube wells were supposed to run amid prolonged power outages, the minister responded that the government was in constant touch with the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company and concerned officials and steps were underway to resolve load shedding problems.
He denied that a special report on ‘bund’ breaches in 2010 had not been made public, and said the Sindh chief minister had made revealed the report through a press conference on December 8, 2010.
