Gone with the wind: In year’s 7th heist, bank robbed of Rs4.6m

Five bandits strike at Habib bank branch in Nazimabad. The robbers also took away the CCTV camera recordings.

KARACHI:
In yet another bank robbery this year, all it took at least five bandits was eight minutes to make away with over Rs4.6 million from a private bank branch in Nazimabad.

The previous six bank robberies earlier in the year have witnessed more than Rs12 million being taken away from the banks located in Jamshed Quarters, Tipu Sultan Road, Ferozabad and Saeedabad.

Rizvia police said that at least five men entered a Habib bank branch at 9 10am. The robbers first snatched the weapons of the two security guards, Fazal Kareem and Maroof, deployed at the bank and then held everyone inside hostage.

Witnesses told the police that the culprits went to the cash counter and the strong-room from where they collected the cash. The robbers also took away the CCTV camera recordings.

SHO Irfan Haider said that two CCTV cameras were installed at the bank and its administration had been using two separate recording systems due to the increase in bank robberies in the city.

“The robbers took away one of the recordings, as they were unaware of the other one,” Haider said. The footage is being used in the investigation and has led law enforcers to believe that the security guards abetted the bandits. “The guards did not offer any resistance and simply handed over their weapons to the robbers,” he added.

The SHO said that the bandits used three motorcycles in the robbery and it appears as if they knew about the location of the cash counter and the strong room. The security guards were detained by the police and later handed over to the Special Investigation Unit for further investigation. An FIR against unidentified persons has been registered on the complaint of the bank manager.
