Independence day

When we learn to celebrate the spirit of helping each other as a nation is when we would truly become independent.

MANCHESTER, UK:
This is with reference to “COAS cancels Independence Day celebrations” (August 12).  Well done General Kayani. I think we, as a nation, should take this a step further and stop wasting resources on exhibits of pseudo pomp and show. The money saved can be used to help save the lives of the flood victims. The next step would be to invest these resources towards building their livelihoods and getting them back towards some sense of normality. Once that is established, we should spend these resources on power projects, schools, universities, hospitals and so forth.

National celebrations have their role in cementing nations, but it’s when we learn to celebrate the spirit of helping each other as a nation that we would truly become independent.
