Although rudderless and indecisive at the moment, lawyers of Karachi are increasingly concerned over the onslaught against the Supreme Court and its first indications came when on Thursday, a group of lawyers took out a rally at Malir courts while the Karachi Bar Association decided to hold a press conference on Friday to express solidarity with the apex court.
Ashraf Samoo, president of the Malir Bar Association, confirming that a rally was taken out by the some 15-20 lawyers, said that they belonged to lawyers’ wing of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.
“The judiciary is ours, judges are ours and without judiciary we (lawyers) are nothing but this not proper at the moment to jump into the foray,” he said adding that some political forces are trying to cash on the issue.
Reposing absolute confidence and faith in the higher judiciary, Samoo said that “judiciary is capable of dealing with the brazen attack, fully competent to adjudge the suo motu case which is basically between two individuals.”
Referring to the lawyers’ movement for the restoration of judiciary, he said “we the struggled for a neutral and independent judiciary but any movement at this stage could prove ill-timed. He, however, added that “if any situation arises lawyers will stand by the side of judiciary.”
Meanwhile, Honorary Secretary of the Karachi Bar Association, Khlaid Mumtaz, told The Express Tribune that they will hold a press conference on Friday to announce their strategy and stand over the recent crisis.
