He said the police returned fire, killing the two on the spot.
He said the deceased were fleeing after killing two men and injured four others in a robbery attempt in Satellite Town late Friday night.
The DPO said the police were investigating if there was any previous criminal record on the deceased.
He said they were fleeing on a motorcycle they had snatched from one Muhammad Sharif from near Pul Dingaro after the robbery.
Chiniot police had registered the motorcycle snatching case on Sharif’s complaint, Station House Officer Ghulam Dad told The Tribune.
The DPO identified the two men killed on resisting the robbery as Muhammad Usman and his brother Muhammad Maqsood.
He said they were shot and killed near Yaseen Kohlu Stop on Jhumra-Chiniot Road. Qasim, Dost Muhammad, Shehzad and Javaid suffered bullet injuries and were taken to Chiniot district headquarters (DHQ) Hospital where doctors referred Qasim and Dost Muhammad to Allied Hospital in Faisalabad.
Doctors at Allied Hospital later described their condition as out of danger.
Later, dozens of people staged a sit-in on Jhumra-Chiniot Road to protest the killings in the robbery. They held the police responsible, saying that they had failed to maintain law and order in the area.
Naseer Ahmad, one of the protesters, said residents of the area had lodged several complaints about the worsening law and order with the police but no action had followed.
The protesters dispersed after the DPO assured them of prompt action on complaints of robberies.
