Commending the contribution of citizens of Faisalabad in mapping the city, Vice President of Google Maps, Brian McClendon, during a press briefing this week declared the map of the city “almost more detailed than any American city.”
He said, “It is one of the best examples I have ever seen. Over a period of four years, it went from a naked map to almost more detailed than any American city I know.”
McClendon said that the people who were experts in their areas were able to add details through Map Maker, which Google Maps developed in 2008.
He said that in countries where good base maps were not available, there was a need of the application, which has proven to be a great source of mapping cities across the world.
Speaking about Faisalabad’s mapping, the Google VP said, “Labels in different languages, local business listings, bike paths, parks, areas can be seen which are user-contributed.”
Earlier, Google Inc announced that it was deploying a fleet of small, camera-equipped airplanes above several cities in its ambitious and controversial plan to create a digital map of the world.
Google had declined to name the cities, but it showed a demonstration of a 3D map of San Francisco, in which a user can navigate around an aerial view of the city.
McClendon had said the privacy issues were similar to all aerial imagery and that the type of 45-degree-angle pictures that the planes take have been used for a long time.

First of all, like every other newspaper, E.T also rephrases others' words to make them sound what it wants to sound. He said 'Faisalabad is as detailed as any other American city'. Meaning simply, the map was very detailed showing all the locations.
Secondly, angraizi to samajh sahi ati nahi. It is detailed like any american city doesnot mean it's structure is like American cities. It certainly doesnot mean that it is "mapped' like American cities. That would mean all the roads in faisalabad cut at 90 degree angles. Which isn't the case anywhere in Faisalabad. So hate to burst your bubble Faisalabadis.
I've never felt this proud to be Faisalabadi, except for when we won the national T20, unfortunately I don't remember what year or which team we played, i just remember that I was proud.

Guys, you should consider the benefits of these maps without having any valid reason for these maps to be used for wrong activities and any past example of such. If you would like to know then your Pakistan Army used the same maps during massive floods in 2010 and saved hundreds of people who were stuck in places -- some of which were not known to Surveying department.
The security issue is to be handled by law and order enforcement agencies and as with current security situation it cannot go worse with digital maps. By the way, you already can buy paper maps from your local book shops but they are only guide maps because the technology and resources are limited to departments and nevertheless the departments do not work as they are supposed to...
Please do not share this sort of information, this becomes an asset for people who want to use it for doing something wrong. If you remember when Raymond Davis was captured he has GPS that has fully loaded map of Lahore. So this sort information is quite important. Because you learn about city by living there for years and years....some stranger gets all this information by just one click.....so also consider this point.
Karachi's already very well mapped on google.

For America and Europe there are 3-d maps available and you are talking about that why Faisalabadis made this map which is infact not even 3-d. Get out of this ignorance my friend and also I dont know but Pakistanis try their level best to undermine any positivty by their so called intelligent ( stupid) analysis.
