LAHORE:

Chief justice of the Lahore High Court on Thursday dismissed a petition by former MPA Aslam Madhyana who sought transfer of his trial in a torture case from Sargodha to Lahore or some other district.

Madhyana’s lawyer had submitted that no lawyer in Sargodha was ready to defend the former MPA after Sargodha Bar Association passed a resolution against him. He said every accused had the right to engage a counsel for his defence. But this right, he said, was being denied in the petitioner’s case. The lawyer for the complainant argued that the trial was in its final stage and Madhyana was only trying to delay it. He requested the court to allow the trial court to conclude its proceedings.

Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial directed the Sargodha Bar Association president to ensure protection for Madhyana’s lawyer appearing before the trial court. Meanwhile, an LHC division bench adjourned the hearing of Madhyana’s bail petition till June 11.
