Environment: Business chamber to donate 15,000 saplings

Will also sponsor a spring festival.

As many as 15,000 saplings will be provided to the Islamia University of Bahawalpur (IUB) for the spring season plantation by the Bahawalpur Chamber of Commerce and Industries, BCCI President Muzammilur Rasheed Abbasi said at a World Environment Day seminar at the university.


He said the chamber would also sponsor a spring festival at the university to raise awareness about the importance of environment.

Other events at the ceremony arranged jointly by the IUB, the Environment Protection Agency and the Cholistan Development Council included an awareness raising walk, a lecture on climate change, debates and a painting/poster design competition.

Munazza Fatima, a lecturer at IUB’s geography department, gave a lecture on climate change in Pakistan. She said immediate steps were needed to check emission of green house gases in the country. She listed deforestation and smoke emitted by vehicles and factories as the major cause of air pollution in the country.

CDC director Farooq Ahmed Khan and District Officer (Environment) Chaudhry Muhammad Rafiq briefed the audience on activities of their departments.

Other speakers were IUB Students Affairs Director Prof Mahmood Ahmed, CDC director Razia Malik and Industrialist Mahmood Majeed and IUB Focal Person on Environment Prof Rao Muhammad Afzal Khan.
