Acid crime: Convict sentenced to 30 years in prison
Convict had proposed to marry 45-year-old Khalida Mai’s daughter, but she had turned down the proposal.

Anti Terrorism Court Judge Ishtiaq Ahmad on Thursday awarded 30 years imprisonment and a Rs100,000 fine on a man he found guilty of throwing acid at a woman in Shorkot.
Prosecution had said that Aun Abbas had proposed to marry 45-year-old Khalida Mai’s daughter, but she had turned down the proposal. They said he had then broken into her house on April 20 while her husband was out of town, and had tried to rape her daughter.
When the two women shouted for help, he threw acid at them, injuring Mai and while feeling threatened them with death in case he was reported to the police.
Later some neighbours, who learnt about the incident, informed the police.
A case was finally registered on Mai’s husband’s complaint.
Mai was sent to tehsil headquarters hospital, where doctors treating her said she had 30 per cent burns. Medical Superintendent Dr Zafarullah Sheikh told the court that the victim’s burns had become septic and she would likely take a couple of months to recover.
