1,500 wardens to bring it under control

KARACHI: Traffic jams flared tempers on the first day of Ramazan as people across the city were stuck in a gridlock of vehicles from afternoon to late evening.

In an effort to improve matters, Administrator Karachi Fazlur Rehman ordered to deploy city wardens on major roads, roundabouts and trade centres to assist traffic police during the month.

Rehman made the announcement while addressing a meeting held in Civic Centre on Thursday to discuss arrangements for Ramazan. EDO municipal services Masood Alam, officers of the municipal services department, the chief of city wardens and coordinators were also present at the meeting.

EDO Alam said city wardens will take part in controlling traffic in the city, for which 1,500 city wardens have been deployed. The city wardens will perform their duty from 4 pm till late night.

Special attention will be paid to 48 of the trickier and busier spots, which include I I Chundrigar Road, Jama Cloth Market, Fresco Chowk, Shahrae Pakistan, Saddar, Light House, Boulton Market, Tibet Centre, Numaish Roundabout, Punjab Roundabout, Teen Talwar Roundabout, Guru Mandir, Nazimabad, Hyderi Market, Nipa Roundabout, Hassan Square, Jauhar Morr, New Karachi, Quaidabad and signal-free corridors I, II and III.
