Schools report improved grades
The British Council released the results of the O- and A-level examinations to schools in the city on Thursday.
LAHORE:
The British Council released the results of the O- and A-level examinations to schools in the city on Thursday.
The Council said it was not prepared to release a summary of the results for another month, but a few schools reported that their results for the Cambridge International Examination (CIE) had improved. Thousands of mostly private school students sit the exams each year.
Aitchison College
Fakir Ejazuddin, the principal of Aitchison College, said he was satisfied with his students’ results and they were better than last year’s. He said the schools would issue a press release detailing their results in one day.
An administrator told The Express Tribune that 169 Aitchison students took the O-level exams and 115 the A-level exams three months ago. The best O-level results were achieved by a student who got 13 As. Four others got 10 As and eight got nine As, he said. The best A-levels result was six As, followed by two students with five As and three with four As. The CIE introduced a new grade this year, A*, which is given to students who score more than 90 per cent marks. The A grade is for 80 per cent or more, B for 70 per cent, C for 60 per cent and D for 50 per cent.
City School:
Maryam Imrana, regional director of City Schools, told The Express Tribune that they were still receiving results at their 155 branches across Pakistan and it would take a day to compile them.
She said 2,500 City School students had sat the O- and A-level exams in 2010, and more than 1,500 had achieved A*and A grades in at least one subject. She said that 166 of these students were from Lahore.
Dr Dania Qazi, studies director at City Schools, said she was hopeful the institution would do as well as it did last year, when several of its students achieved distinctions. Six City Schools students scored the top marks worldwide in various A-level subjects in 2009, while four students did the same in O-level subjects. Five A-level students got the top marks in their subjects in Islamabad, five in Karachi and one in Lahore, she said. Three O-level students each also got the best results in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad last year, she said.
She said that 95 per cent of students who passed their O-level exams went on to do their A-levels. Most students went for professional degrees like medicine, engineering and business after their A-levels, she said.
Qazi said that the most encouraging results were from the City School branch in Sargodha, opened just last year. All its O-level students achieved A* and A grades in all their subjects this year, she claimed.
Divisional Public School’s principal Abdul Shakoor Butt told The Express Tribune that 50 of his students had sat the O level exams and he was satisfied with the results.
American National School principal Prof Arshad M Bhutta said that 33 O-level students and 28 A-level students had received their results, and 90 per cent of them were excellent.
Ali, a Beaconhouse student, got an A in mathematics and B in physics, but intends to apply to have his chemistry paper checked again after he got a U grade. He said he could not understand how he could have got the grade since he had been well-prepared for the exam.
