5th heist: Bank robbed of Rs3.7m within 10 minutes

The police claims that four men barged into the bank at 10:06 am.

KARACHI:

In the fifth bank heist of the year, the Summit Bank branch in Defence was robbed of Rs3.76 million by four men on Friday.

The police have detained the security guards of the bank over their possible links with the robbers, and also obtained the CCTV footage of the incident.

The Darakshan police said that four bandits barged into the private bank branch in the Badar Commercial Area at 10:06 am.

According to witnesses, the robbers snatched the weapons of the security guards and took the people hostage. They went to the strong room and made away with the money within ten minutes.

Police officials said that apparently the robbers were Afghan.

According to Clifton SP Dr Farrukh Ahmed, the robbers were aware of the location of the bank’s safe and the presence of money. “After taking the staff hostage, they directly went to the strong room,” he said.

The officer said that the CCTV footage suggests the involvement of security guards, Mehboob and Raheel, in the robbery.

“One of the guards had to be positioned in the picket inside the bank, while the other had to be outside, but both of them were standing at the main door and handed their weapons to the bandits without any resistance,” he said.

The SP said that none of the witnesses told the police about the vehicle used by the bandits in the robbery. “There may have been more robbers who stayed outside the bank,” he said.

The police said that bank staff would also be questioned during the investigation.

The case (FIR no. 222/12) was registered against unidentified suspects on the bank manager’s complaint.
