World Environment Day: Seminar on new laws to begin activities today

Environmental Tribunal will be launched on June 2.

A seminar will be held in the city on Friday (today) in connection with the World Environment Day.


The Environment Protection Department secretary will brief the audience on the Environment Protection Act of 2012. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) officials will speak on Green Economy, this year’s theme.


The Environment Tribunal will be launched by the EPD on June 2. Law Minister Rana Sanaullah will inaugurate the tribunal. Two more seminars, an exhibition and a poetry programme will be arranged in the city to mark the day.

The seminars will be held on June 2 and June 5, respectively, at the Punjabi Complex in Gaddafi Stadium and at the Lahore Arts Council. Dr AR Saleemi, recently appointed to the Environmental Tribunal, will speak on green technology at the June 5 seminar. Nawaz Chaudhary, a professor at Punjab University’s Earth and Environment Sciences Department, will also speak at the seminar.

A two day exhibition of plants used in industries to treat pollutants will begin at Alhamra on June 4.  At least 16 businesses will participate in the event. Among other machines, water treatment plants and scrubber models will be showcased at the exhibition. The poetry programme will be held at Punjabi Complex on June 4. Poets Khalid Masood and Anwar Maqsood will read their poetry at the event.

The World Environment Day is being observed on June 5 since 1973.
