Force multiplier: Punjab Police to recruit 10,000 constables a year

IG says police promotion issues being sorted out.

LAHORE:

Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has given approval to the Punjab Police recruiting 10,000 constables every year to fill the shortage in the force, Inspector General Habibur Rehman said on Thursday.

The director of public relations at the IG’s office told The Express Tribune that the Punjab Police currently had a strength of around 170,000, while it should be around 400,000.

Addressing reporters after chairing police meetings in Rawalpindi and Attock, the IG said that several promotions issues concerning officers were being sorted out. He said that the promotion board had met thrice to consider the promotions of deputy superintendents (DSPs) to superintendents of police (SPs). He said that the promotions of DSPs of the executive cadre, legal cadre and traffic had been finalised. He said that a 15 per cent quota of promotions of inspectors had been set aside for direct recruits to the force.

He said that there was a shortage of 600 constables in the Rawalpindi police. He said that police officers had been directed to stay fit and any officers who had a waist larger than 38 inches would not be given field assignments.

In reply to a question, Rehman said that there had been a total of 80 encounters between police and “hardened criminals or proclaimed offenders” in the province since he took over as IG in March this year. At the meeting in Rawalpindi, he handed out awards and certificates to 107 police officers that took part in an encounter in Chontra police jurisdiction.

Rehman said that he had held regional level meetings with police officers and was now visiting individual districts to review the police performance, starting with Rawalpindi. He said that the government aimed to make each police station a model and to make available all possible resources to fight crime. He said that efficient and honest officers would be rewarded while corrupt and negligent officers would be punished. He said that the Punjab Police had established an internal accountability cell to assess the performance of police officials and check their excesses.

He said that the protection of the life and property of citizens was the prime duty of the police. He said officials from the constable to the district police officer level would be sent on professional training and physical fitness courses.

Rawalpindi Regional Police Officer Captain (retired) Muhammad Zubair and City Police Officer Azhar Hameed Khokhar, among others, attended the meeting with the IG in Rawalpindi, while Attock District Police Officer Muhammad Hilal Khan was at the second meeting with the IG.
