Volatile situation: City’s police station map to be overhauled

Major changes discussed at CM House to rein in violence.

KARACHI:
The territorial jurisdictions of Karachi’s police stations will be revised, decided Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik in a meeting co-chaired with Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah at CM House on Thursday.

Sub-police stations will be opened in all volatile areas and community policing and intelligence units will be set up. Intelligence Bureau and Special Branch officials will work to identify criminals.

Kharadar, Orangi, Korangi, Patelpara, Katti Pahari, Lyari, Malir and SITE have been declared ‘sensitive’ or particularly violence-hit and the home department will be giving them this status officially. Special patrolling around the clock will be enhanced and the Rangers and police will do snap checking.

All station house officers, who basically run police stations, will divide their areas into security zones by classifying them by violent history, raids and the crime rate. The model of the Islamabad zone may be replicated as it has yielded good results. Officials will meet next in the first week of June to devise a way to get criminals to surrender illegal weapons.

The Sindh government will acquire aerial surveillance with the help of the federal government that will buy two units to monitor the streets of Karachi. Jail records will be reviewed and criminals out on bail will be brought on record and their activities will be monitored.

Malik assured the Sindh officials that the federal government was working to ensure that SIM cards are not sent or delivered directly to clients and should be posted to the address on their CNIC.

Officials proposed a general meeting of all political parties to create inter-ethnic, inter-sectarian harmony in Sindh province and reduce political polarisation in Karachi. All political groups will be taken into confidence about weeding out criminals using their names.
