Kashmir issue: UN urged to mediate withdrawal of troops

Jurists endorse Kashmiris’ right to self-determination.

Eminent jurist and politicians at the conclusion of a national conference on Monday urged upon the United Nations Secretary General Baan Ki Moon to mediate the withdrawal of all armed forces from Jammu and Kashmir. They requested the UN secretary general to appoint a small unit of UN forces to maintain law and order in the disputed Himalayan state.


The national conference, titled “Islamic Law, International Community and the Global Peace” was organised by the Islamic Ideological Council of Azad Jammu & Kashmir.


AJK President Sardar Muhammad Yaqoob Khan presided over the conference, which was also attended by AJK Prime Minister Chaudhry Abdul Majeed.

Justice (retd) Majeed Mallick proposed that the Jammu and Kashmir should be given the status of an observer in the United Nations Organisation by acknowledged its leadership till the time a plebiscite is held and its future is determined by the people.

Other speakers also called for an early and peaceful settlement of the Kashmir issue.

They said that people of the disputed state should be granted the right to self-determination under the spirit of international norms.
