Bold mugging: Two doctors looted inside Benazir Bhutto Hospital
Following robbery, hospital staff protested and boycotted OPD and emergency services.
RAWALPINDI:
Two female doctors were looted from within the Benazir Bhutto Hospital on Thursday morning.
The gunman, wearing a shirt and trousers, entered the side room of the medical wards III and IV at around 5:30am. He took Dr Beenish and Dr Nida’s mobile phones and Rs100 in cash, a hospital official told The Express Tribune.
The incident sent a wave of shock among doctors and the hospital staff, who protested against inadequate security measures at the public hospital. They also boycotted emergency and OPD proceedings.
A senior doctor at the hospital said they have been concerned about safety, as there is no checking at entry points. “Anyone can enter [the hospital] with a gun,” the doctor said.
BBH Medical Superintendent Dr Asif Qadir Mir confirmed the incident, adding that the police was informed immediately after the mugging. The police took the hospital’s CCTV footage into custody for investigations, he added. “I also initiated a departmental inquiry,” Dr Mir added.
Responding to a question, Dr Mir said even though the watchman and ward boys were present nearby, they did not attempt to stop the robber as he was carrying a gun.
The area SHO, Ijaz Shah, denied that there was a robbery at the hospital. No such incident took place nor did the police register a case, he said.
